Full MemberGenices ✓ Eco Label Sri Lanka (National Cleaner Production Centre Sri Lanka) Sri Lanka Ecolabel Sri Lanka The Ecolabel Sri Lanka journey began in 2018, when it was initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) under the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP CI-SCP). This global initiative aims to support the shift towards sustainable patterns of consumption and production, particularly in developing countries, through capacity-building and policy support. Building on its early progress, Ecolabel Sri Lanka gained international recognition in 2021 by becoming a full member of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN). Full membership signified that Sri Lanka’s ecolabelling programme met the necessary criteria to be recognized among established global peers. A major milestone was achieved in 2024, when the Ecolabel Sri Lanka programme was officially accredited by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB) in accordance with ISO/IEC 17065:2012. This international standard specifies requirements for bodies certifying products, processes, and services, ensuring credibility, impartiality, and technical competence. Accreditation by SLAB affirmed the integrity and reliability of the ecolabelling certification system. In the same year, 2024, Ecolabel Sri Lanka expanded its international engagement through technical collaboration agreements such as Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with several prominent global ecolabelling programmes such as Japan Ecomark. These partnerships enhance knowledge exchange, harmonization of standards, and facilitate mutual recognition, thereby promoting cross-border acceptance of ecolabelled products. Ecolabel Sri Lanka continued its growth trajectory by extending its scope in 2025 to include sustainable food products. This expansion addresses growing consumer and market demand for environmentally responsible food choices, while encouraging local producers to adopt sustainable agricultural and processing practices in line with global ecolabelling criteria.
